About Blackwater Mine

Situated 73 kilometres south-east of Emerald, Blackwater is the second-largest open-cut metallurgical coal mine in the Bowen Basin. This long-life operation began in 1967 and has grown to become one of the longest coal mines in the Southern Hemisphere, with a strike length of 80 kilometres. Blackwater extracts high quality metallurgical and thermal coal for the export market using truck and shovel, as well as loader and dragline. 

About the Role

An exciting site-based opportunity has become available for a Geotechnical Technician to join the Geology team at our Blackwater Mine. As a Geotechnical Technician at Whitehaven, you will be responsible for providing the safe and efficient delivery of geotechnical monitoring as well as logistical support across the operation.

 

What You’ll Do

  • Ensure geotechnical monitoring systems are maintained and optimised.
  • Manage the installation, data capture and performance of geotechnical monitoring activities.
  • Provide logistical support to site Geotechnical Engineers for ground investigations and monitoring.
  • Identify and implement improvement opportunities with a particular focus on monitoring systems.
  • Assist in managing critical monitoring activities and documentation reviews.

 

What You’ll Bring

  • Demonstrated experience in geotechnical monitoring and ground investigations.
  • Working knowledge of geological and geotechnical mechanisms.
  • An open cut coal background is highly valued but other commodities or industries will be considered.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, interpersonal and stakeholder engagement skills, and the ability to articulate technical information.
