The program 

 

Pillowcase Project is a disaster resilience education program designed to help children prepare psychologically and practically for an emergency.  Aimed at students in years 3 & 4, the one-hour workshop involves engaging discussions and interactive activities to help students:

  • Understand and discuss the importance of being prepared for an emergency.
  • Prepare their minds for the thoughts and feelings that may arise before, during or after an emergency.
  • Know the difference between a need and a want item and what to pack in an emergency kit.

Each student is then given a pillowcase to decorate and take home to start their own emergency kit.

 

The opportunity 

 

This role would suit those wishing to educate children and/or youth using Red Cross content and resources in a classroom setting.  Time commitment will vary as delivery depends on school bookings; however, it is expected that you will deliver at least one session per month during school terms.  Red Cross will ensure you receive adequate training, support, and access to other opportunities within the world’s largest humanitarian network.

 

The impact 

 

As a volunteer you will assist to build resilient communities and support people in disasters.  Educate children and families on the importance of being prepared for an emergency and gain valuable experience working in schools.

 

Application requirements

 

For this role you will be required to undertake a National Police Check, which will be organised

through Red Cross. 

To submit this an application you will be need to upload a recent copy of your CV and/or provide details for two professional references.

The role will also require you to hold or apply for a Working With Children Check or Working With Vulnerable People Check depending on your State/Territory.  Red Cross can assist you to apply for this check.

Hold a valid WA Driver’s licence.
